Sunderland v Manchester United: match preview

2:06 PM

Sunderland VS Manchester United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday May 2 2010, kick-off 16.00 BST.

    vS

Tale of the game ....

United have to win, as simple as that, because by the time they go into this late Sunday game they could be four points adrift of Liverpool. But, if Chelsea have failed to win, the chance is there for United to go top with just two games to play.

United, who are unbeaten in 15 Premier League games, home and away, against Sunderland, dropped two points when they last played Sunderland, at Old Trafford in October, and they had to claw back from behind twice. Darren Bent gave Sunderland an early lead before Dimitar Berbatov equalised.

Kenwyne Jones responded quickly – but an own goal by Anton Ferdinand handed United a point after ex-United midfielder Kieran Richardson had been sent off.

Sunderland are on a good run, with three wins from their last four games. And they are unbeaten at home in their last nine League games, going back to December when Villa won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.

United, meanwhile, boast the best away record in the division with 33 points, one more than Villa and two more than Chelsea. United have also kept four successive clean sheets in their last four away games in the Premier League.

Sunderland test midfielder Lee Cattermole and defender George McCarthy but John Mensah and Andy Reid are out. United are still without new English Footballer of the Year Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville, along with Michael Owen, Danny Wellbeck and Anderson. But Rio Ferdinand has an outside chance of returning.

Sunderland (4-4-2): Gordon; Bardsley, Turner, Kilgallon, Richardson; Campbell, Henderson, Meyler, Malbranque; Bent, Jones.

Manchester United (4-3-3): Van der Sar; Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs; Valencia, Berbatov, Nani.

Referee: Steve Bennett. Matches: 26. R 5. Y 98.

This season: United 2 Sunderland 2.

Last season: United 1 Sunderland 0, Sunderland 1 United 2.

Stat of the game: United are unbeaten in 15 Premier League games, home and away, against Sunderland.

Olympique Marseille's Steve Mandanda fancies being Manchester United's next top goalkeeper

Steve Mandanda
Date of birth - 28 March 1985
Current club - Marseille
Natinonal team - France

French international believes he should be on club's shortlist...

Olympique Marseille's French international goalkeeper Steve Mandanda has thrown his hat into the ring to be Manchester United's long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar.

The 25-year-old is currently performing well in a table-topping OM side, although he has been dislodged by Olympique Lyonnais' Hugo Lloris — another rumoured United target — in the pecking order for the national side.

And although Mandanda is happy at the Stade Velodrome, he confirmed he hopes to play in England one day and sees no reason why Sir Alex Ferguson shouldn't be taking a close look at him over the summer.

"Naturally I should be staying in Marseille next season but you never know," Mandanda told JDD Newspaper.

"I've not had any contact with any club but all know my dream is to play in the Premier League.

"I've heard Manchester United are looking for a goalkeeper. My name isn't on their list, but you never know."

Marseille are currently five points clear atop Ligue 1 with four games remaining. Mandanda has kept 12 clean sheets in 33 appearances.

EPL title should already be Chelsea’s [ Impossible ]

hey.. who said it so..[actually ramai wartawan sukan yang berkata begitu.. ada aku kesah] eventho chelshit showed impressive game late this morning..[7-0 over stoke city] it doesnt matter the title will goes to them.. Chelsea will face Liverfool this weekend.. Anything can happen as Liverfool also won over Burley last night.. While ManUnited will face with Sunderland this weekend.. ManUnited also has opportunity to get rid off Chelsea.. Only times will tell everything.. Until end of the season, anything can happend.. For Arsenal, they sholud forget about the title as last weekend they ended up with draw against Manchester City

and dun forget that problem bear by Chelsea regarding Wright Philip transfer matter that against the rules and law definetly.. If FA decides that some points will deduct from Chelsea, they will end with less point...

Hohoho.. I hope so.. Glory, Glory Man United..

CONGRATES WAYNE ROONEY!!!

Wayne Rooney Scoops PFA Award

LONDON (Reuters) - Wayne Rooney's glittering season continued when he was named English soccer's players' player of the year on Sunday.

The England and Manchester United striker, who has scored 34 goals for his club this season, was the clear winner of the main award ahead of fellow nominees Cesc Fabregas, Didier Drogba and Carlos Tevez.

That made it four years in a row it has gone to a United player following two for Cristiano Ronaldo and one for Ryan Giggs.

The 24-year-old Rooney missed United's 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday with a groin strain which might also rule him out of the final two league games of the season but he should be fit to lead England's attack at the World Cup.

Aston Villa midfielder James Milner won the Professional Football Association's (PFA) young player of the year award.

2nd League Manchester United Vs Bayern Munich
The results
Manchester United 3-2 Bayern Munich (4-4 on aggregate, Bayern win on away goals)

Goals: Darron Gibson 3, Nani 7, 41; Ivica Olic 43, Arjen Robben 74

Goal of the night
Manchester United-Bayern Munich (Nani, 41)
Brazilian full-back Rafael picked out Antonio Valencia with a quick throw-in and, after dinking the ball past Martin Demichelis with a sublime piece of skill, the Ecuadorian winger fired a low ball into the area that Wayne Rooney opted not to attack. With the Bayern defence utterly bamboozled, Nani arrived at the far post and found the net with a ferocious right-footed effort.

The key moments
Pre-match drama
The evening kicked off with an early surprise at Old Trafford, where Rooney was announced among the United starters just six days after suffering a seemingly serious ankle injury in the first leg. Disappointed by the performance of his charges in Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Chelsea, Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson also made waves by leaving Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov on the bench and both Ji-Sung Park and Gary Neville in the stands. It was therefore with a rejigged first XI that United took to the field and the changes bore fruit with barely three minutes gone. Rafael broke down the right before finding Rooney, who freed Gibson with a pinpoint pass and watched as his young Irish team-mate blasted beyond Hans-Jorg Butt from outside the area. Four minutes later, Valencia fired in a low cross for Nani to convert via an outrageous flick with his trailing leg. Butt was left helpless and Van Gaal stood stunned on the touchline as Old Trafford roared with delight. Bayern had yet to have their say however.

'We were very unlucky ... the Bayern players got Rafael sent off,' says Alex FergusonAlex Ferguson, Louis van Gaal and Edwin van der Saar on Manchester United's Champions League exit and the red card that changed the game

Nani: We're disappointed

"I think we deserved to go through. They got a lucky goal in the last minute last week, today we had 10 men and even then they didn't create many chances - it had to be a wonder goal to kick us out."- Edwin van der Sar
